Black Cultural News exists to close an information gap. Our readers make decisions about money, health, school, voting, travel and culture, and they deserve reporting that is accurate, useful and respectful of their time. These standards explain how we work.
Our Mission
We publish practical news for Black Americans and the wider diaspora. Every story should leave readers with something they can use: a deadline, a resource, a step to take, a way to support someone, or a clearer picture of what is happening.
Accuracy and Sourcing
- We verify facts, names, dates, numbers and deadlines against primary sources whenever possible, including government agencies, official program pages, court records, press releases and the organizations involved.
- We link to our sources so readers can check our work.
- We attribute quotes to the person who said them and link to where they said it. We do not invent quotes, composite characters or anonymous sources.
- When a fact cannot be verified, we leave it out.
- Every article is reviewed by our editor before publication.
The Quick Version
Most articles open with a short summary called The Quick Version, so readers can get the key facts in seconds. The summary is held to the same accuracy standard as the full story.
Opinion
Opinion pieces are clearly labeled with “Opinion:” in the headline and appear in our Opinions section. They reflect the views of the writer. Facts used in opinion pieces are held to the same standard as news.
Use of Technology and Images
- We use digital tools, including AI tools, to help with research, drafting and editing. People decide what we cover, and every published story is fact checked and approved by our editor.
- Many article images are illustrations created with AI image tools. They do not show real people or real events unless the caption or story says so. We never create images meant to look like a real, identifiable person.
- When we feature a YouTube video or other creator content, we credit and link to the creator.
Independence
Our coverage is not for sale. Advertisers and sponsors do not choose or review our stories. Any sponsored content will be clearly labeled as sponsored.
Corrections
We correct errors promptly and openly. See our Corrections Policy for how to report a mistake.
