HBCU football 2026 has hit the midpoint of the regular season, and the picture is getting clearer by the week. Two unbeaten programs are setting the pace, the SWAC West is a two-team sprint, and the first weekend of October brings the kind of neutral-site classic that decides divisions. Here is what you need to know, plus exactly when and where to watch.

All records below are through games played Saturday, Sept. 26.

HBCU football 2026: the teams to watch

Here is how the Division I top 10 shook out in Sports Illustrated’s HBCU rankings released Sept. 28:

  1. South Carolina State (5-0): held off Bethune-Cookman 31-21.
  2. Prairie View A&M (2-3): beat Grambling State 21-14 at the State Fair Classic.
  3. Alabama State (3-1): rolled Mississippi Valley State 41-15.
  4. Jackson State (4-0): beat Southern 35-17 in the Boombox Classic.
  5. Delaware State (3-2): edged Towson 33-28 with a late touchdown.
  6. Alcorn State (3-2): won 43-40 in overtime over Texas Southern.
  7. Morgan State (3-1)
  8. North Carolina Central (2-3)
  9. Bethune-Cookman (2-2)
  10. Grambling State (2-2)

Delaware State, coached by former NFL receiver DeSean Jackson, is the story many fans are watching in the MEAC. On the Division II side, Kentucky State sits at No. 1 in the same SI rankings after its first win over Albany State since 2003.

South Carolina State: the team everyone is chasing

The Bulldogs have been dominant. Their official schedule shows wins of 87-0, 31-13, 66-0, 20-17 and 31-21, which adds up to a 235-51 scoring edge through five games. The close one was a 20-17 road win at Furman.

They are also the defending Celebration Bowl champions. According to Opta Analyst, SC State has won back-to-back MEAC titles and 11 straight league games since 2023, and coach Chennis Berry is 10-0 in MEAC games. The last program to win three straight outright MEAC titles was Hampton, from 2004 to 2006. That is the target.

The catch: SC State does not play a MEAC game until Oct. 24, when Norfolk State visits for homecoming. It closes with Morgan State, Howard, N.C. Central and Delaware State, so November will decide the league.

The MEAC race is wide open behind them

The MEAC standings show all six teams at 0-0 in league play. Behind SC State, Morgan State (3-1), Delaware State (3-2) and Norfolk State (3-2) have the best overall records. North Carolina Central (2-3) and Howard (1-3) both lost to FBS opponents last weekend, and they still have every conference game in front of them. The MEAC champion earns the league’s spot in the Celebration Bowl.

The SWAC race: East and West

The SWAC plays in two divisions, and the division winners meet in the SWAC Championship, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5, on ESPN2, per Alabama State’s schedule. Here is the official SWAC standings snapshot:

  • East: Jackson State 1-0 (4-0), Alabama A&M 1-0 (4-1), Alabama State 1-0 (3-1), Bethune-Cookman 0-0 (2-2), Florida A&M 0-1 (1-4), Mississippi Valley State 0-1 (1-4)
  • West: Alcorn State 2-0 (3-2), Prairie View A&M 2-0 (2-3), Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0-1 (2-2), Grambling State 0-1 (2-2), Southern 0-1 (2-3), Texas Southern 0-2 (1-3)

Jackson State looks like the East favorite. Against Southern, quarterback Jared Lockhart threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Nate Blount IV ran for 135 yards and two scores, and the Tigers finished with zero turnovers, WLBT reported. It was JSU’s eighth straight win over Southern, which is now coached by Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk.

In the West, Prairie View’s overall record hides the fact that it is unbeaten in league play. Prairie View, which fell to SC State in last December’s Celebration Bowl, hosts Alcorn State on Oct. 17 in what could decide the division.

The biggest HBCU games in the first two weekends of October

The headliner is the ninth annual Gulf Coast Challenge on Oct. 3. Jackson State won last year’s meeting 57-24 and has not lost to Alabama A&M since 2018, FOX10 reported. But A&M arrives on a four-game winning streak, including a 40-21 win at Florida A&M, per Alabama A&M’s schedule. Kickoff is 4 p.m. CT on SWAC TV, per Jackson State’s schedule, and the winner takes early control of the East.

A week later, A&M hosts Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 10, while Jackson State travels to Grambling. In the West, Alcorn State visits Grambling for homecoming on Oct. 3, per Alcorn’s schedule.

The Celebration Bowl picture

The 2026 Celebration Bowl is Saturday, Dec. 12, at noon ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, per the official Celebration Bowl site, and Alabama State’s schedule lists ABC as the network. It is the unofficial HBCU national championship game.

At midseason, the most likely MEAC representative is still SC State, simply because nobody has beaten it. The SWAC side is far less settled. Jackson State has the best résumé, Alabama A&M and Alabama State are right there in the East, and Alcorn and Prairie View will likely settle the West head to head.
