October is when the calendar gets crowded. Homecoming season hits its peak, the midterm clock starts ticking loud, and the fall releases stop teasing and start dropping. So we built a Black culture calendar for October 2026 that you can actually plan around.

Everything below was checked against an official schedule, a publisher or a major outlet as of September 28. Dates can shift, especially for campus events, so confirm with the host before you book a flight.

Do these first: money and ballots

The 2027-28 FAFSA is open now. The U.S. Department of Education announced on September 23 that the 2027-28 FAFSA form is available at fafsa.gov for the school year starting July 1, 2027. If you have a high school senior or a college student at home, knock it out early so you are not scrambling later. It is the form that opens the door to federal student aid, and the department says most submissions process immediately.

Voter registration deadlines are here. Georgia’s last day to register for the general election is Monday, October 5. Texas has the same deadline, and the Texas Secretary of State says early voting runs October 19 to 30 ahead of Election Day on November 3. Other states have their own dates, so check yours with our midterms voter checklist.

Week 1: September 29 to October 4

• Friday, Oct. 2: On this date in 1967, Thurgood Marshall took his judicial oath and became the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Good dinner table history for the kids.
• Saturday, Oct. 3: Jackson State meets Alabama A&M in the Gulf Coast Challenge in Mobile, Alabama. SWAC football with a bay breeze.

Week 2: October 5 to 11

• Monday, Oct. 5: Voter registration deadline in Georgia and Texas (see above).
• Tuesday, Oct. 6: White House correspondent April Ryan publishes Notes on a Blacklash: When a Black Woman Goes Viral from Amistad, a look at online misogynoir and the personal cost of going viral.
• Wednesday, Oct. 7: Quinta Brunson and the Abbott crew are back. Abbott Elementary Season 6 premieres at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. For everything else worth streaming, see our fall streaming guide.
• Friday, Oct. 9: Misty Green, directed by Chris Rock and starring Rosalind Eleazar, Daniel Kaluuya and Adam Driver, opens in theaters from A24. It follows an award-winning actress fighting for her second act.
• Sunday, Oct. 11: Howard University homecoming week begins and runs through October 18 under the theme “Wildest Dreams.”

Week 3: October 12 to 18

• Tuesday, Oct. 13: S.A. Cosby takes on a Marvel icon in Truth to Power: A Luke Cage Marvel Crime Novel, which sends Luke Cage to rural Virginia to investigate his cousin’s suspicious death.
• Thursday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 18: The Black Panther Party 60th Anniversary gathering in downtown Oakland, organized by the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and It’s About Time BPP. Expect workshops, a library exhibit, a gala and a community day in Lil’ Bobby Hutton Park.
• Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17: Howard’s Yardfest takes over both days.
• Saturday, Oct. 17: The main event at Howard is a matchup people will argue about for a year: the Bison host the Morehouse Maroon Tigers at Greene Stadium. One note: Howard has postponed its homecoming parade this year because of construction on Georgia Avenue.
• Saturday, Oct. 17: Down South, Jackson State’s homecoming game is against Florida A&M in Jackson, Mississippi. Get there early for the bands.

Week 4: October 19 to 25

• Monday, Oct. 19: Early voting opens in Texas and runs through October 30.
• Tuesday, Oct. 20: Walter Mosley returns with Hanging and Burning, a new King Oliver novel from Little, Brown. A dying gangster hires Joe King Oliver to find his missing granddaughter.
• Sunday, Oct. 25: North Carolina A&T’s 100th Greatest Homecoming on Earth kicks off in Greensboro and runs through November 1. A century of GHOE. If you have ever wanted to go, this is the year.

Week 5: October 26 to 31

• Saturday, Oct. 31: Halloween is loaded. The Aggies play Elon in the centennial GHOE game, and in Birmingham, Alabama State and Alabama A&M meet in the 85th Magic City Classic at Legion Field, kickoff 2:30 p.m. Costumes optional. Tailgate mandatory.

Why the Panthers at 60 matters

The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was founded in October 1966 in Oakland by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, who met at Merritt College. Sixty years later, the anniversary organizers describe the Oakland gathering as a way of “engaging the Party’s legacy as instruction.” They also say they are sponsoring full attendance for 1,000 high school students, which tells you exactly who they want in the room. If you cannot get to Oakland, October is still a good month to read up and talk with the elders in your family who remember.
