Black Cultural News (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website blackculturalnews.com (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Site, you agree to the practices described here.
Information We Collect
We collect information in the following ways:
- Information you give us. When you subscribe to our newsletter, fill out our contact or resource request forms, or leave a comment, we collect what you provide, typically your name, email address and your message.
- Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our servers and security service automatically receive basic technical data when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you request and the date and time. With your permission, cookies may also collect information about how you use the Site (see Cookies below).
How We Use Your Information
- To send you the newsletter and updates you asked for;
- To answer your questions, tips, advertising inquiries and requests;
- To run, secure and improve the Site and our coverage;
- To understand how readers use the Site, only if you allow analytics cookies; and
- To protect the Site, our readers and our legal rights.
Newsletter and Email
Our newsletter is managed with FluentCRM, hosted on our own servers. When you subscribe, we store your name and email so we can send you the content you signed up for. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out anytime. You can also email us to be removed.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. When you first visit, we ask which cookies you’re OK with, and you can change your answer anytime from Cookie Choices (also linked at the bottom of every page). We group them like this:
- Keeps the site working (always on): remembers your cookie choices, protects the Site from spam and bots through our security provider Cloudflare, and keeps you signed in if you have an account.
- Help us see what readers like (off until you allow it): Google Analytics cookies that count things like which stories get read and how people find us.
- YouTube videos (off until you allow it): lets videos in our stories play on the page. YouTube may set its own cookies when a video loads.
- Ads picked for you (off until you allow it): we don’t use any personalized advertising today. If we add it, it will only run with your permission.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the “keeps the site working” cookies may affect how the Site works.
Analytics
If you allow it, we use Google Analytics to understand how readers find and use the Site. Google Analytics may collect data such as your IP address and your activity on the Site. We only see totals and trends, and we don’t use it to identify you. Google’s use of this data is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy. If you don’t allow analytics, Google Analytics doesn’t save any cookies for your visit. We also use Google Search Console, which reports how our pages appear in Google search and doesn’t set cookies on the Site.
Embedded Videos
Some stories include YouTube videos. Until you allow YouTube videos or click Play, the video doesn’t load and YouTube receives nothing from you through our Site. Once a video loads, Google’s Privacy Policy applies.
Advertising
The Site shows ads for our own promotions and for direct sponsors such as Jet Black Design. These ads are images and links, and they don’t track you. We don’t currently use third-party ad networks or personalized advertising. If we add them in the future, they will only run for readers who turn on “Ads picked for you,” and we’ll update this policy.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information, and we don’t share it for targeted advertising. We share information only in these limited cases:
- Service providers who help us run the Site, such as hosting, security (Cloudflare), email delivery and, if you allow it, analytics (Google). They must protect your data;
- Legal reasons, when needed to follow the law, enforce our Terms of Use, or protect the rights, safety and property of Black Cultural News, our readers or others; and
- Business transfers, if the Site is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
Your Choices and Rights
You can:
- Change your cookie choices anytime;
- Opt out of any sale or sharing of your personal information on our Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information page;
- Unsubscribe from our newsletter using the link in any email; and
- Ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you.
Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a request to opt out, and we keep analytics, video and advertising cookies off for that browser.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), other U.S. state privacy laws, or the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). We won’t treat you differently for using your rights. To make a request, email [email protected]. You can also have an authorized agent contact us for you.
Data Retention
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy, or as the law requires. Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to respond and follow up.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no method of sending or storing data online is completely secure. We can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children’s Privacy
The Site isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Third-Party Links
Our stories may link to websites and resources we don’t control. This policy doesn’t apply to those sites, so please review their privacy policies.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes take effect when posted, and the “Last updated” date above shows the latest version.
