Mountain View, CA — Chelsea Clinton, actress Mindy Kaling, Girl Scouts of the USA, SevenTeen Magazine, and several other organizations and foundations have partnered with Google to launch “Made with Code” – a global initiative to inspire girls to become programmers.
According to USA Today, the initiative includes a commitment of $50 million to support programs that can help get more females into computer science, like rewarding teachers who support girls who take CS courses on Codecademy or Khan Academy.
It also provides great resources such as introductory Blockly-based coding projects, a web-based, graphical programming language, and fun projects such as enabling coders to play with x and y coordinates to accessorize selfies with cartoon berets or blouses or build basic animated GIFs.
To officially launch the program, Google held a huge event in Manhattan, New York, and the host of the event was none other than actress Mindy Kaling (of The Mindy Project). But Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, was also a featured speaker. Thousands of tech-savvy women and girls attended.
Google will also give out grants to local Girl Scouts and Boys and Girls Clubs around the country to host girl-coding parties and to fund a range other awareness campaigns.
