Breaking News: Barbie and Zerina Akers Light Up Instagram with Iconic Looks!
From leg warmers to the iconic Totally Hair Barbie, Barbie has always been known for her style since her debut in 1959. Now, in her latest fashion makeover, Emmy Award-winning costume designer and stylist Zerina Akers has teamed up with Barbie to create an editorial-style series that celebrates representation and reflects Barbie as an icon through the lens of Black culture.
The collaboration, launched during Black History Month, features a series of posts on Barbie’s global Instagram platform, @BarbieStyle. With a celebrity client list that includes Chloe x Halle, Niecy Nash, Megan Thee Stallion, and Latto, Akers knows a thing or two about fashion. She founded Black Owned Everything in 2020 to elevate Black-owned fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands by connecting them to the global marketplace.

For Akers, the collaboration is a full-circle moment. Barbie and Mattel were a huge part of her childhood, and dressing the iconic doll is like a dream come true. Barbie was also one of her earliest forms of representation, and it was crucial to see herself in the toys she played with.
Through this collaboration, Akers hopes to inspire the next generation of fashionistas to dream big and explore creatively, as she did with her own Barbie dolls.
So head over to @BarbieStyle on Instagram and check out this collection that celebrates Black culture and empowerment. Trust me, you’ll want to add every doll to your collection!
