HBCU Application Deadlines for Fall 2027: Your Nov. 1 Checklist

The Quick Version

  • Mark Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026: early deadlines for Howard, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, FAMU and NC A&T, plus Morehouse Early Decision.
  • Hampton’s Early Action deadline is Nov. 15, and Morgan State and Xavier use Dec. 1 priority deadlines for scholarship money.
  • The Common Black College Application costs $20 for its member HBCUs, but Howard, Spelman, Hampton, FAMU and NC A&T are not on its list, so use the Common App for those.
  • The 2027-28 FAFSA is already open. File it in October while you finish applications.

If your senior has an HBCU on the list, October is the month that matters. HBCU application deadlines for fall 2027 cluster around Nov. 1, and this year Nov. 1 lands on a Sunday. Wait until that weekend and you are competing with thousands of other students for the same slow website.

Below is what we verified on each school’s official admissions page in late September 2026, plus the cheapest ways to apply, how fee waivers work and a week-by-week October plan for students and parents.

HBCU application deadlines for fall 2027 at a glance

Screenshot this table and share it with your family group chat. The last column tells you whether the school is a member of the Common Black College Application. Application fees for Morehouse, NC A&T and Morgan State come from the Common App 2026-27 deadline and fee chart; the rest come from each school’s own page.

A few details worth knowing before you hit submit:

  • Early Decision is binding. Howard, Spelman and Morehouse offer it. If you are admitted, you commit to attend. Morehouse releases Early Decision results Dec. 5, 2026, with a deposit due Jan. 15, 2027. Only apply this way if the school is your clear first choice and your family has talked through cost.
  • Early Action is not binding. You apply early, hear back early and still have until May 1 to decide at most schools.
  • Documents have their own deadlines. Spelman wants supporting documents within five business days of its deadline and moves incomplete early files to Regular Decision. NC A&T and FAMU give you about two weeks for transcripts and other materials.
  • Scholarship money often follows the early date. Morgan State ties its Dec. 1 priority deadline to consideration for the Troy E. Quinn Award, worth up to $6,000 a year. Xavier’s Dec. 1 date is its preferred scholarship deadline.

The Common Black College Application: what $20 gets you

The Common Black College Application lets students “apply to over 50 HBCUs for only $20” with one form. Its current 2026-2027 member list names more than 70 schools, including Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Morgan State, Xavier, Dillard, Tennessee State, Jackson State, North Carolina Central, Alabama State and Southern University. The CBCA says its member schools award more than $1 billion in scholarships each year.

Here is the part many families miss. Several of the most applied-to HBCUs are not on the CBCA member list, including Howard, Spelman, Hampton, FAMU and NC A&T. Howard and Spelman take the Common Application, and Hampton, FAMU and NC A&T appear on the Common App’s fee and deadline chart. The smart play for many students is both: the CBCA for a wide net of member schools, and the Common App or a school’s own portal for everyone else.

One more note: some schools accept several routes. Clark Atlanta takes its own application, the Common App and the CBCA, and lists its own application as preferred. Xavier takes its own free application or the Common App.

How to get application fees waived

Fees add up quickly. Applying to the nine schools in our table would cost $365 in fees if you paid every one. There are real ways to cut that:

  • SAT fee waiver students automatically receive college application fee waivers with their scores. College Board says more than 2,000 colleges accept them and “You may use as many college application fee waivers as you need.”
  • Common App fee waivers run through your counselor. Howard says it does not issue its own waivers; your counselor submits the Common App fee waiver affirmation instead.
  • Ask about other waivers. FAMU says it accepts fee waivers from ACT, College Board and NACAC.
  • Watch for free windows. Hampton waived its $60 fee from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, 2026. That window has closed, but it shows why you should check admissions pages and social accounts often.
  • North Carolina students: NC Countdown to College runs Oct. 19 at 7:30 a.m. through Oct. 25 at 5 p.m., when many North Carolina colleges waive application fees. The 2026 participant list includes NC A&T, North Carolina Central, Winston-Salem State, Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith, Shaw and Livingstone.

The October checklist for seniors

  1. Week of Oct. 5: Finalize your list with two or three early schools. Create your Common App and CBCA accounts. Ask teachers and your counselor for recommendations now, not the last week of October.
  2. Week of Oct. 12: Finish your main essay and have one adult read it for typos. Request transcripts and send any test scores you plan to use.
  3. Week of Oct. 19: If you are in North Carolina, submit applications to participating schools during Countdown to College. Complete the FAFSA with your parent or guardian.
  4. Week of Oct. 26: Submit Nov. 1 applications by Friday, Oct. 30. Pay fees or confirm waivers, then check each portal to make sure every document shows as received.

What parents can do this month

  • Do the FAFSA together. The 2027-28 FAFSA opened Sept. 23, 2026. Many HBCUs have their own aid deadlines. Morehouse, for example, lists a Jan. 30, 2027 financial aid deadline for all rounds.
  • Talk money before Early Decision. A binding yes should come after you have looked at each school’s net price calculator together.
  • Budget the fees. Even with waivers, set aside something for a couple of applications or score sends.
  • Visit if you can. Homecoming is a great time to feel a campus. Our HBCU homecoming 2026 dates guide has the fall schedule.
  • Stack scholarships. Outside awards can close the gap that aid leaves. Start with our list of scholarships for Black students with October and November deadlines.

Deadlines can shift, and some schools post updates late, so confirm each date on the official admissions page before your student submits. Then celebrate. Getting those applications in on time is a win for the whole family.
