The Quick Version

  • Opening night is Tuesday, Oct. 20, with three games on NBC and Peacock, starting with Celtics at Pistons at 3 p.m. ET.
  • The champion Knicks raise their banner, then host LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and the new-look 76ers at 7 p.m. ET.
  • To see every national game this season you need three places: NBC and Peacock, ESPN and ABC, and Prime Video.
  • Rookies to watch: No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa (Wizards), Darryn Peterson (Jazz) and Cameron Boozer (Grizzlies).

The NBA 2026-27 season starts Tuesday, October 20, and the league could not have scripted a louder opening. The New York Knicks, who beat the San Antonio Spurs in five games in June, raise their first championship banner since 1973 before hosting a Philadelphia team that now includes LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

Add Giannis Antetokounmpo in a Miami Heat jersey, a back-to-back MVP chasing more, and a rookie class led by a BYU scoring machine, and there is a lot to keep track of. Here is your cheat sheet.

NBA 2026-27 season opening night: the three games

All three opening night games air on NBC and stream on Peacock, per the official NBA schedule release:

  • 3 p.m. ET: Celtics at Pistons. An afternoon tip between the two teams with the best records in the East last regular season, per FOX Sports.
  • 7 p.m. ET: 76ers at Knicks. Banner night at Madison Square Garden, plus Philadelphia debuts for James and Brown.
  • 9:30 p.m. ET: Thunder at Spurs. A rematch of the 2026 Western Conference finals, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander against Victor Wembanyama.

The Black stars and storylines everyone will be talking about

Jalen Brunson, defending champ. Brunson was named Finals MVP after averaging 32.6 points and closing the series with a Knicks Finals record 45 points in Game 5, according to NBA.com. The question now is whether New York can do it again with a target on its back.

LeBron James in Philadelphia. At 41, James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers, joining Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown, who came over from Boston in a trade for Paul George. His return to Los Angeles on Christmas Day is already circled.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander going for three. SGA won his second straight MVP, becoming the 14th player to go back to back. He averaged 31.1 points and also won Clutch Player of the Year. Luka Dončić, who led the league at 33.5 points a game, is his main scoring rival.

Giannis in Miami. The two-time MVP and 2021 Finals MVP was traded to the Heat this offseason, and his first game comes October 21 at home against a Minnesota team that just added LaMelo Ball.

The West is stacked. Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Denver with Nikola Jokić, and a Lakers team built around Dončić all have real title hopes, and many of those teams see each other in the first week.

Wemby and the Spurs want the last step. San Antonio reached the Finals in June before falling to New York. Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs open at home against the Thunder and get a Finals rematch at Madison Square Garden on Christmas.

The full Christmas Day slate on ABC and ESPN, per the NBA:

  • Spurs at Knicks, noon ET
  • Heat at Celtics, 2:30 p.m. ET
  • 76ers at Lakers, 5 p.m. ET
  • Thunder at Timberwolves, 8 p.m. ET, Minnesota’s first Christmas home game
  • Nuggets at Warriors, 10:30 p.m. ET

Rookies to watch

The 2026 draft class arrived with serious hype. Here are the top of the board and where each player landed, per the NBA.com draft results:

  • AJ Dybantsa, Wizards (No. 1, BYU): The 6-foot-9 wing led the nation in scoring at 25.5 points per game and is the first BYU player ever taken first overall.
  • Darryn Peterson, Jazz (No. 2, Kansas): A polished guard who gives Utah a long-term backcourt anchor.
  • Cameron Boozer, Grizzlies (No. 3, Duke): A strong, skilled forward, and yes, the son of former All-Star Carlos Boozer.
  • Caleb Wilson, Bulls (No. 4, North Carolina): An athletic big who could play a lot right away in Chicago.
  • Mikel Brown Jr., Nets (No. 6, Louisville), Darius Acuff Jr., Kings (No. 7, Arkansas) and Kingston Flemings, Hawks (No. 8, Houston): Three guards who could put up numbers on teams hungry for creators.
